The ERC-90 Sagaie (ERC stands for Engin Roues Canon) is an armored reconnaissance vehicle still in use amongst the French Forces. In Wargame: Red Dragon, ERC-90 Sagale is rerolled into a Fire Support Vehicle. It is named after a type of light spear. Built to counter T-72 that were being exported in the 80's, it features a 90mm canon designed for armour piercing duties on a low silhouette. The Sagaie distinguished itself in Kosovo but is mainly used for peace-keeping missions in Africa since the end of the Cold War. An aggressive reconaissance unit, the Sagaie can be a valuable asset if used correctly.

Good at taking out light to medium armoured opponents, the Sagaie remains a good reconnaissance unit. While a bit more pricey than its counterparts, it can bring more points than it's initial value pretty easily.

History[]

The ERC-90 Sagaie was constructed by Panhard in 1980 and meant to replace the Panhard AMLs. The first orders being placed by Argentina to patrol their border with Chile. The next largest orders came from Mexico, while Ivory Coast became it's first African customer to replace their aging AMX-13s. In terms of combat history, the Sagaie was used by France in the Gulf War, Kosovo and Bosnia, while also sending forces to the Ivory Coast, Chad and is currently being used in a war against Boko Haram and in Mali. Apart from France, the ERC-90 is also used by Argentina, Chad, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Mexico and Nigeria.

ERC-90 Sagale were used the the light cavalry regiments of the 9th Marine Division Régiment d'Infanterie-Chars de Marine and 1er Régiment d'Infanterie de Marine since AMX-10RC were too heavy to be transported by air and use African bridges. These regiments has three combat squadrons each with four armored platoons with three Panhard ERC-90 Sagaie along with three P4 Jeep each. These regiments replaced their ERC-90 Sagale with AMX-10RC with other cavalry regiments receiving the old ERC-90 Sagale.

Overview[]

Available to NATO forces, the Sagaie gives access to an other armored recon vehicle, the AMX-10 RC.

The Sagaie's main interests are:

  • High speed. It is the fastest reconnaissance vehicle available to NATO forces, 10km/h faster than the SpPz Luchs
  • Good Operational range with low fuel consumption.
  • A canon, equal to the American V-150 90mm and superior to the FV101 Scorpion. It has high range, good accuracy but average damage.
  • A small silhouette.
  • Low ammunition.
  • Good optics.

Tactics[]

Taking these features into account, the Sagaie has three main roles:

  • Counter-spying. Its accurate and efficient canon, combined with a small size and good optics, make the Sagaie an efficient counter to enemy reconnaissance units, with a good chance of taking them out in one shot, while remaining undetected. The single shot makes it harder for the human eye to find to find its origin, and the good accuracy gives good enough chances of hitting in one or two shots.
  • Sniping. The features making the Sagaie a good counter-spying unit added to its high speed and operational range gives it the opportunity to infiltrate enemy lines undetected to take out high value targets: Command units and lightly armored artillery.
  • Light armor hunter. Taking out generally lightly armored anti-tank units, or APC preparing to charge a forest.

It can also be used to as an harassment tool, ambushing enemy heavy armor then retreating, or leading them in the line of fire of more efficient anti-tank units.
