Grenztruppen (Lit. Border Troops) were the border guards of the NVA, tasked with protecting both the Berlin wall, and the Iron Curtain.
Like other infantry forces of the NVA, Grenzers were armed with the MPi-K assault rifle, and the reliable yet very dated RPG-5.
Grenzers are recon infantry, and the only one in the Pact arsenal at that. They have poor statistics overall, and shouldn't be trusted with any assault task, on top of that they are only 8 available, so use them in buildings.
History[]
Many Germanic nations had a history of using "Grenzers" during the Renaissance and Napoleonic times, Austria's Grenzers were frontiersmen yielding from Croatia Trnaslavisya, used to guard the borders of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from the Ottoman menace.
Grenztruppen were never really expected to hold off an attack by West Germany, they were armed and trained to stand long enough for reinforcements to arrive. They also guarded the borders to make sure no citizens escaped the country to West Germany, and vise versa. They were among the most loyal and trusted troops (and had to be to not defect at the first chance) and randomly dispersed through their ranks were Stasi officers disguised as enlisted men who's purpose was to weed out anyone who thought of defecting. Soldiers who bunked together were never allowed to patrol together and patrol groups were mixed up weekly for the same reason.
Grenzers were equipped in similar fashion as other NVA forces, with Strichtarn (raindrop) camouflage uniforms, grey web gear, and usually side caps.
Grenzkommando Mitte and Border Regiment 5 from Grenzkommando Nord planned to invade West Berlin.
