The Shenyang J-8C is a Chinese interceptor aircraft that initially appeared in Wargame: Red Dragon.
History[]
The Shenyang J-8C (NATO reporting name FINBACK) is a twin-engine, single-seat, supersonic interceptor. It is an improved variant of the J-8II series, which includes a fly-by-wire controls, new WP-14 engines, multi-mode pulse-doppler radar and digital fire control system. The type also was provided multi-function displays (MFDs) in the cockpit, and compatibility with a variety of navigation and targeting pods.
Overview[]
The Shenyang J-8C is a relatively inexpensive air superiority fighter available to Chinese and Red Dragon decks. It is armed with four PL-11 AAMs and an internal 23mm cannon. The PL-11 is similar to early-model Sparrow missiles (AIM-7E), giving the J-8C medium-range engagement capability. The J-8C is best used as an interceptor, as its PL-11 missile cannot be used to target helicopters, though its Twin Type 23 cannon gives the J-8C some tactical flexibility. The main drawbacks of the J-8C are to be found in its missile compliment. The PL-11 has poor range compared to later Sparrow models and the AMRAAM, and the type is a semi-active missile, which requires the J-8C to continue prosecuting its target, leaving it vulnerable to return fire. The PL-11 is also not as accurate as later model Sparrow or AMRAAM missiles. The J-8C's ECM is good for the aircraft's cost, and the type fills the interception role well against strike platforms.
