The KPz T-72S is a East German Main Battle Tank that appears in Wargame: Red Dragon.

History[]

T-72S obr. 1987 "Shilden" is a export version of T-72B with only 155 Kontakt-1 ERA bricks, simplified NBC system, and without anti-radiation lining. The T-72S1 variant lost the capability to shoot Svir ATGM.

During the 39th meeting of the Military Scientific and Technical Council in Warsaw in April 1989, NVA planned to receive T-72S from Romania in 1995.

Overview[]

Of the three top-tier tanks available to the Eastern Bloc (the other two being the Polish PT-91 Twardy and the Czechoslovak T-72M2 Moderna), the East German T-72S is the only one not classed as a superheavy. In fact, it is just for East Germans, the KPz T-72S could be the "top-tier" as they don't have better tanks, while the other Pact allies both have access to T-72S.

The three types of Eastern Bloc T-72S share the same in-game stats, and they don't have a direct Soviet prototype, but rather a middle ground between T-72B obr. 1987 (110) and obr. 1989 (140): its protection is similar with obr. 1987 with 1 less Side Armor being the only difference, and its armaments is identical with obr. 1989.

All variants of the T-72S are at their very best when supporting the team's brawlers, picking off light vehicles and infantry to save their allies' powerful ammo for bigger games, while helping them deal with other superheavies with their ATGMs. As a rear-guard in a formation with the fearsome Twardy and Moderna, T-72S helps form a wrecking ball that will win virtually any tank battle, beating down even the mighty M1A2 Abrams with minimal damage in turn.

NATO opponents with similar levels to the T-72S are M1A1 Abrams (115) and Leopard 2A4 (130). The latter two types of tanks have same stats on main gun, which has a better Accuracy/Stabilizer (65%/60%) and slightly higher RoF (9 RPM), but AP Power (19) and HE Power (3) are lower. The differences in Armor basically follow the sequence of costs, except for NATO tanks where the Top Armor is 3, the Size is Big, and the Autonomy is also shorter.

As with all tanks wanting for support, keep the T-72S as distant from enemy ATGMs, aircraft and towns as is tactically plausible. And it should be noted that ATGM of T-72S does not have a Stabilizer.
