The Mot.-Schützen '90 is the later-era version of Mot.-Schützen Rifle Team that appears in The Millionth Mile DLC of Wargame: Red Dragon.
History[]
Like their Soviet Counterparts each of the two East German Panzer Divisions has a tracked Motorisierte Schützenregimenten and the four Motorisierte Schützendivisionen has a tracked Motorisierte Schützenregimenten and two wheeled Motorisierte Schützenregimenten. Each Panzerregiment has a Mot.-Schützenkompanie mounted on BMP-1 while the Panzer Division's Panzerregiment had a additional Motorisierte Schützenbataillon.
STG 941 is a modified 5.56mm AK-74 that originally designed for export, while LMG 944 is its LMG version. East Germany received production technology for AK-74 and 5.45mm bullets from the Soviet Union in August 1981, but the transfer agreement stipulated that the AK-74 it produced must not be used for export. Therefore, in order to avoid this limitation, East Germany designed the STG 940 series which nomenclature differs from convention (e.g. MPi-KM-74). Its development was began in 1985, the finalization and naming were determined in September 1988.[1][2]
The basic principle of the STG 940 series is the same as the AK-74, but there are many differences in appearance. In addition to firing 5.56mm NATO, the STG 940 uses many plastic components and has an M16-style flash hider. It is also allowed to fire in 3-round bursts (except the sniper model PG 945).
In 1989, the STG 940 series was designed with five different models. In this series, only the assault rifle models STG 941 and STG 942 (differs in stock) have been mass-produced, while the other three models (STG 943 carbine, LMG 944, PG 945) only have sample guns or even paper plans. After the Germany unified, the federal government preferred to pay liquidated damages but terminated the export plan for the gun, and closed the production plant in June 1990.
It should be noted that as mentioned earlier, East Germany has AK-74, so they do not actually need to choose an export model as the hypothetical "next generation rifle" like the Yugoslav infantry (e.g. Proleteri '90).
