The SPz BMP-1 SP-1 is an East German Infantry Fighting Vehicle that introduced in Wargame: European Escalation.

History[]

"SPz" stands for "Schützenpanzer", meaning "Armored (vehicle for) Troops".

SPz BMP-1 SP-1 was NVA Designation for the Soviet BMP-1 (Ob.765 Sp1). East German ordered 1,133 BMP-1s from both the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia in 1974, and they were delivered between 1973 and 1989. Due to wear and tear, 1,112 were available ultimately. Some sources claim that the majority of East German BMP-1 is Sp2 type (SPz BMP-1 SP-2), followed by P type (SPz BMP-1 P/c), and lastly Sp1 type.

Each of the two East German Panzer Division has a company or a battalion of BMP mounted infantry in each Panzer Regiment along having Motorisierte Schützenregimenten equipped with BMP-1. Motorisierte Schützendivisionen has one Motorisierte Schützenregimenten equipped with BMP-1. In the last days of the NVA, the BMP-1 outfitted six motorized rifle regiments, the 3rd, 7th, 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 27th. Some lower readiness units had a BMP company in each Panzer Regiment.

Following the reunification of East and West Germany, the Bundeswehr integrated 851 BMP-1s into its ranks in 1991, upgrading and modifying them into the BMP-1A1 Ost variant to meet Bundeswehr standards. The BMP-1 was eventually retired from service by 1994 and either scrapped or sold to other countries. In 1990, 110 unmodified BMP-1/BMP-1P (BMP-1 TJJ) were sold to Finland.
