History[]

See Výsadkáři for unit history information

LADA was the code name for a Czechoslovakian prototype weapon system. The plan to replace vz. 58 AR, vz. 59 LMG and vz. 61 SMG was first developed in the 1970s, while the LADA project itself officially began in January 1986.

The LADA system initially followed the Warsaw Pact armies' switch to Soviet 5.45x39mm cartridge, and consisted of three variations of the weapon: standard assault rifle, compact rifle and LMG/SAW, similar to the relationship between AK-74, AKS-74U, and RPK-74 (they share same icons in-game). Interestingly, it is reported that the designers initially did not obtain relevant data on the 5.45mm ammunition, and ultimately obtained it through illegal means from a Soviet military officer (later officially).

The new rifle was mechanically an AK, but had a number improved features including thumb-operated safety/selector switch, aperture sights mounted on an improved receiver cover, and a compact sidefolding stock. The magazine of the LADA system was designed to be compatible with Soviet weapons.[1][2]

By November 1989, the rifles were going into limited initial production for troop trials, and achieved satisfactory success. The LADA system passed all relevant procedures in February 1990 and was awaiting production, just before the Velvet Revolution split Czechoslovakia. Due to the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact, the Czech National Defense Council has decided to no longer use the Soviet 5.45x39mm cartridge, therefore, the LADA system needs to be redesigned according to the NATO 5.56mm cartridge. The modifications were completed by the end of 1991.

As a result of the division between the two republics and financial difficulties, the LADA system ultimately did not enter military service. In 1993, the system was renamed CZ-2000 and became an export product. Anyway, there is no evidence to suggest that the LADA system will use 7.62mm cartridge for the LMG model as in-game "LADA RPK".
